Cast all your cares to Jesus

Please indulge me a little, but there is a song by Five Iron Frenzy called “Every New Day” (warning: if you like traditional hymn music, you might be unhappy). I really enjoy this song, for one, it is ska-punk, second, the lyrics.

When I was small, the furthest I could reach, was not so high.
Then I, thought the world was so much smaller
Feeling I could fly

Through distant deeps and skies, beyond infinity
Below the face of Heaven,
He stoops to create me

Dear Father, I need You,
Your strength my heart to mend
I want to fly higher,
Every new day again…

What? The song is about an adult who sees life being difficult and complicated as he has gotten older. In his adulthood he remembers how simple his life was when he was a little child. He realizes his need to turn to God every day.

As each person grows older, there is a sad reality; as you progress in life more responsibilities comes your way. Graduate from college, better get a job! Getting married, take care of wife, then kids. Feed the kids, raise them, clothe them, educate, protect, and support them. More life, more bills to pay… yikes! It is no wonder that as a society, we have never been more stressed out! And with the ever increasing incidences of random acts of violence, be it the workplace, public spaces, and schools. It is a scary time!

That is the context of the song; we need the Lord everyday, because each day is stressful and given the uncertainty of might or might not happen, who else can you turn to? To deal with the stress of uncertainty, and the realities of living in a Fallen World! God tells us in 1 Peter 5:7 “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” and also in Phil. 4:6-7 “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

That is how I deal with the stress of life! Because I don’t have the power to safeguard anyone, but I can turn to The One who does have the power… Jesus.
